This is a quote from an article published December 3 2009 at The National:
'It cost billions of euros and decades to construct. It was supposed to solve the mysteries of subatomic physics. It was supposed to be a marvel of modern engineering. It was supposed to work.
Is there any greater disappointment in modern science than the Large Hadron Collider (LHC)? The LHC broke down again on Wednesday, frustrating legions of physicists and fans of this staggering piece of kit. And it is staggering. To smash subatomic particles at almost the speed of light, engineers built 27 kilometres of tunnels, a cooling system to maintain temperatures as cold as in deep space, and power stations to supply enough electricity to light Geneva, where the LHC is located. Too bad it keeps breaking.
From shoddy construction to a baguette that inexplicably was discovered deep in the bowels of the machine, the LHC has been plagued by a series of increasingly bizarre mechanical failures. '
